Remembering Todd Benzinger’s Time As A Royal

True powder blue. Great uniforms pictured in this 1992 Topps card.

Today marks the 50th birthday of former Kansas City Royals first basemen Todd Benzinger. Benzinger briefly played for the Royals in the second half of 1991 after coming over from the Reds via a trade in July for Carmelo Martinez. While he only appeared in 78 games, it always seemed to me like Benzinger was in Kansas City longer than that.

In his time, Benzinger batted a respectable .294/.338/.386 with two home runs and 40 RBI. For a first basemen, Benzinger didn’t provide much pop as he hit 66 home runs in 9 major league seasons.

After the season Benzinger was moved back to National League, when he was shipped to the Los Angeles Dodgers in a trade for minor league second basemen Domingo Mota and outfielder Chris Gwynn.

In his post baseball career, Benzinger was involved in coaching girls high school basketball in Ohio before briefly managing the Single A Dayton Dragons in the Reds organization during 2009 and ’10.
