August Opportunity

The Royals currently stand at 2 games back of the Toronto Blue Jays in the Wildcard standings while also a game back of the Yankees, a 1/2 game back of the Seattle Mariners and 5 back of the Detroit Tigers in the division race. While it’s never good to trail three teams in a race for one spot there is a small opportunity that presents itself in the scheduling for the Royals to makeup ground.

As you can see the Royals play the fewest number of contending teams over the next month, playing just 14 games versus teams within 5 games of the wildcard race or closer. On top of that the Royals play the teams in front of them in just one game (Yankees makeup game) while those teams face off against each other in two different series while also playing the team the Royals trail in their divisional race, the Tigers, in four different series.

Of course the Royals play the best team in either league, the A’s, twice during the month of August. Last season Kansas City was just 1-5 versus Oakland after playing them pretty evenly over the previous three seasons (14-13). If they can hold serve with Oakland then they should be given an ample opportunity against the rest of the leagues bottom feeders to pick up ground on New York, Seattle and Toronto while  possibly picking up ground on the Tigers. A positive August could leave Kansas City with their most interesting September worth of games since 1989.

About The Author

I grew up on the mean gravel roads of Iowa where I started my love for baseball from the age of 2. George Brett and the voice of Denny Matthews deepened my love even more for the Royals as my father and I spent summers listening to the team on our deck or in the car on our way to or from my little league and high school games. Sports was always the common bond that my father and I enjoyed and the Royals were in the center of that.I currently live in La Vista with my wife, two sons, two dogs and a pair of gross cats where we are grinding through until we can move somewhere warm when we retire. I own Casino Cab Company and Bluffs Affordable Auto Repair in Council Bluffs trying to build my 1% empire.
