Monty struggled again

Things aren’t right with Mike Montgomery right now and at this point there is really no other way to spin it after another uninspiring start Saturday as he gave up 5 runs on 7 hits and 4 walks in just 3.1 innings.  Montgomery continues to struggle with his fastball control which combined with at best an average breaking ball makes him a below average pitcher.  With Mike’s struggles Omaha would be down 5-1 through 4 innings and a couple more Isotopes runs would increase that lead to 7-1 at the end of 6. Up 7-1 and with Albuquerque starter John Ely done the Isotopes would turn to Cole St. Clair and what a mistake that would turn out to be as the reliever would lose control with some sketchy defense behind him walking three combined with two Isotope errors and just two Omaha hits to even up the score at 7, Derrick Robinson’s 2 run double was the big hit of the inning for Omaha.  Omaha would tack on a run in the 8th and 9th to take a lead to the bottom of the 9th but a fielding error from Clint Robinson would open up the inning for Albuquerque to tie the game and send it to extras.  Tied at 9 the bullpens would calm things down until the top of the 13th when Terry Evans hit a mammoth bomb to dead center to score three and just three hitters later Clint Robinson would hit a two run bomb to put Omaha up 14-9 which would turn out to be more than enough.

NW Arkansas Naturals 9 Corpus Christi Hooks 7

Things weren’t looking good to start Saturday after a three run inning by the Hooks off starter Justin Marks in the first inning but the Naturals offense would wake up and punch their way to a much needed win.  RF prospect Wil Myers would get the runs going in his first AB driving a three run homer over the left field wall to even the game back up and give him his first of four hits on the night.  Myers double in the third inning got a two run one out rally going crossing the plate on an error while Yem Prades laid down a quality squeeze bunt to score Paulo Orlando in the inning to stretch the lead to 6-3.  Wil would drive in Jenkins i the 4th with a single to put NW Arkansas up 7-4 but the Hooks would tie it in the 5th off Marks ending his day with no chance at earning a win.  Tied at 7 in the 6th Christian Colon would put NW Arkansas up for good with a solo home run his first extra base hit of the year to give Kendal Volz his first victory of the year thanks to a solid 3 shutout, hitless innings.  Wil Myers would drive in his career high fifth run of the night in the ninth inning to push the lead to 9-7 and give the Naturals their third win of the year.

Frederick Keys 3 Wilmington Blue Rocks 2

Following a solid start from yesterday Yordano Ventura made a little noise of his own while on the hill Saturday but was unable to give the Rocks more than 3 innings.  Ventura according to Jason Parks was 95-98 mph with his fastball and was tossing what he called a “bat missing monster” of a curveball that he said is a potential 7 pitch.  Ventura final line stood at 3 IP 3 H 2 ER 3 BB 6 K not the kind of work you would like out of your starting pitcher but in all these games its about development and the reports on his fastball and curve are promising.  Ryan Dennick replaced Ventura with the score 2-1 doing a nice job to keep the Rocks in the game striking out 5 and allowing just a run in his 4 innings but the Rocks offense again couldn’t get much done.  Brett Eibner would triple and score in the top of the ninth but the late rally would fall a run short.

Kane County Cougars 6 Burlington Bees 2
The Cougars brought their bats for the third consecutive game knocking out 11 more hits and 6 runs in the third of four games against the Bees but in this one they got a little pitching to take the win.  Kane County as they’ve done most of the year jumped on the board early with 2 runs in the first when Henry Moreno would break an 0-18 slump to drive in two runs with a single with a 2 out hit.  Kane would be back at it in the 2nd with 3 doubles by Jin Ho-Shin, Justin Trapp and Jorge Bonifacio sandwiched around a Michael Antonio single to score three and put them up 5-0.  Those runs would be plenty with solid pitching from Santiago Garrido, Brooks Pounder, Andrew Stueve and Mike Giovenco as the foursome navigated the Bees lineup and a rain delay to hold Burlington to just 2 runs on 4 hits and 3 walks.  The win earned at least a split Kane in the four game series that will continue tomorrow while pushing their record to 5-4.

About The Author

I grew up on the mean gravel roads of Iowa where I started my love for baseball from the age of 2. George Brett and the voice of Denny Matthews deepened my love even more for the Royals as my father and I spent summers listening to the team on our deck or in the car on our way to or from my little league and high school games. Sports was always the common bond that my father and I enjoyed and the Royals were in the center of that.I currently live in La Vista with my wife, two sons, two dogs and a pair of gross cats where we are grinding through until we can move somewhere warm when we retire. I own Casino Cab Company and Bluffs Affordable Auto Repair in Council Bluffs trying to build my 1% empire.
