Another day another win for the defending PCL champion Storm Chasers thanks to their pitchers ability to dance around base runners and lineups luck to strand only one of their own.  Mike Montgomery took the mound for Omaha for the first time this year but things didn’t look all that different from last year with the lefty giving up 7 hits and 3 walks in just 3.1 innings.  Montgomery had some tough luck in the first inning giving up a bloop single to the first hitter on the night and then getting a ground ball that bounced high to Clint Robinson who lost it in the sun for another hit moving the leadoff man to third in the process, Mike would mitigate the damage a bit allowing just one runner to cross after striking out 2 hitters in the inning.  The Express hitters were working the ball back through the middle against Montgomery and making the lefty work for 77 pitches in those 3+ innings.  With Montgomery dancing around the zone the lefty starter Zach Jackson was attacking it for the Express chopping down the first ten hitters he faced and attacking the zone throughout.  While he was mowing them down early the Chasers hitters learned he was gonna be around the zone and did some attacking of their own in the 5th inning putting together a 3 run rally with a double by Clint Robinson, a triple by David Lough and singles from Tony Abreu, Cody Clark and Anthony Seratelli.  Those runs were enough thanks to a solid effort by the bullpen but Max Ramirez and Anthony Seratelli weren’t done adding offense as each hit bit bombs to right field to pad the Chasers lead and put them in line for their third win in a row.

The Naturals ruined an outstanding first start at AA by Tim Melville Tuesday when reliever Michael Marriot gave up solo home runs in the 8th and 9th innings to turn a 3-2 lead into a 4-3 walkoff loss.  Melville who struggled in the more run depressed Carolina league the last two years was outstanding facing a load of prospects from the San Diego Padres system mowing striking out 6 and limiting them to just 3 singles and a walk during his 5 innings, Melville attacked the zone with 51 strikes out of his 80 pitches thrown leaving with a 3-0 lead.  Elisaul Pimentel would relieve Mevlille and again struggled in relief giving up 2 runs on 3 hits in just 2/3 of an inning.  That 3-2 lead would stand up until the 8th when with one out Marriot would give up a tying home run to Nathan Freiman to tie the game and a first pitch walkoff home run to Jason Hagerty in the 9th.  Christian Colon had a good game going 4-4 but was gunned down at the plate in the top of the 9th looking for the go ahead lead.

The new Blue Rocks hitters are learning that the Carolina league can be a difficult one for hitters to adjust to after just three hits on Monday and second shutout in four games.  With the Rocks bats frozen the Carolina Mudcats were getting their swings in on newbie to the league Greg Billo collecting 7 hits and 4 runs (3 ER) in his 5 innings on the mound.  Those runs were plenty with the TJ House limiting Wilmington just 2 hits in 7 innings of work while striking out 9.  The two teams will battle again on Tuesday with Sugar Ray Marimon getting his first Carolina league start.

The big power international prospects showed why they get plenty of interest and money Monday with Miguel Sano and Jorge Bonifacio putting on nice displays at the plate. Sano the multi-millionaire signee of the Twins push Beloit ahead with not one but two opposite field home runs showing why his 75-80 scale power makes him one of the top prospects in the game and possibly a Miguel Cabrera type bat that the Royals will have to face.  Jorge Bonifacio’s stats at the plate may not have been as loud as Sano’s but for the youngest position player playing in the Midwest league at the current time they weren’t too shabby as the right fielder went 2-2 with a double and three walks.  Those three walks increased Bonifacio’s OBP to a healthy .632 after just four games and increased his walk total to six on the season after collecting just 16 in 252 plate appearances last year.  Sano and Jorge weren’t the only ones taking advantage of the pitching on Monday however with each team collecting 13 hits and handing out 15 free passes 9 of which came from Cougars pitching.  The two Cougars pitchers handing out the most walks were starter Brooks Pounders and reliever Santiago Garrido who dolled out four each but neither did a bad job of keeping the Cougars within reach as the pair yielded just 2 runs despite all the freebies.  It was reliever Andrew Stueve who had the worst of it on the day giving up 6 hits 5 runs and a home run to Sano in just an inning of work taking the loss in the process.  The top of the order did the job with 9 hits and 4 walks but only scored a pair thanks to the 5-7 hitters going 2-13 and stranding 7 in scoring position.

About The Author

I grew up on the mean gravel roads of Iowa where I started my love for baseball from the age of 2. George Brett and the voice of Denny Matthews deepened my love even more for the Royals as my father and I spent summers listening to the team on our deck or in the car on our way to or from my little league and high school games. Sports was always the common bond that my father and I enjoyed and the Royals were in the center of that.I currently live in La Vista with my wife, two sons, two dogs and a pair of gross cats where we are grinding through until we can move somewhere warm when we retire. I own Casino Cab Company and Bluffs Affordable Auto Repair in Council Bluffs trying to build my 1% empire. If you are in the area you can find me at Omaha Storm Chasers games on most nights or just follow me on twitter @ClintScoles.
