Springfield Cardinals 6 NW Arkansas Naturals 3

Yordano Ventura’s second AA start went much better than the first but the right-hander has shown in both he has plenty to work on.  The slender hard throwing Ventura didn’t give up a hit until there was one out in the 6th on this night but he struggled with the zone for much of his start walking five.  He was able to navigate around those walks and low percentage of strikes thrown (54%) thanks to five K’s and seven groundouts leaving with a 3-1 lead that the bullpen would blow.  Reliever Buddy Baumann struggled with the zone walking three and allowing 4 runs after not being able to get an out in the 6th and turning things over to Jon Keck who gave up another run in the 8th.  The loss pushed the Naturals record to 6-21 in the second half, 12.5 games behind the first place Cardinals.

Wilmington Blue Rocks 6 Salem Red Sox 1

Elisaul Pimentel carried the Rocks to a win Friday night with an outstanding start over 7 innings.  The right-hander once acquired in the Scott Podsednik trade allowed just a 5th inning double by Michael Almanzar and a 7th inning single to get through his time on the mound scoreless, striking out six in the process and earning his second win for Wilmington. The offense capably backed up their pitcher with six runs from the 5th inning on including a 3 for 4 effort by Guelin Beltre that included a double and two runs batted in.

Bowling Green Hot Rods 8 Kane County Cougars 5

The restart of last nights suspended game didn’t got well for reliever Jonathan Dooley as the relief pitcher turned what was a 2-0 Cougars lead into a 8-2 deficit in his 3+ innings, giving up seven hits and a pair of walks to allow eight earned runs.  The Cougars scored three runs in the top of the ninth to shrink the deficit and bring the tying run to the plate but a Julio Aparicio strike out and Michael Antonio pop out extinguished any thoughts of a late game comeback.

Burlington Royals 7 Danville Braves 5

Late heroics by Bubba Starling helped the Royals win their fifth game in a row while pushing their lead in the division to 3 games.  The game was a back and forth affair with the Braves jumping up 3-0 in the first with three extra base hits including a solo home run by Airs Alcantara.  That lead would hold up until the middle innings when the Royals big thump offense came alive with Fred Ford’s two run home run in the 4th, tying him for the league lead, that scored Cam Gallagher and shrunk the deficit to a run.  Speedy Terrance Gore would run his way to a run in the 5th to tie the game getting a single with one out, stealing 2nd, advancing to a third on an errant throw and trotting home on Kenny Diekroeger’s single.  More power in the 6th would give the Royals a 5-3 lead as Mark Threlkeld hit his third home run to score he and Ford but the pen could not hang onto that lead long as 16th round pick Austin Fairchild gave up a runs in the 6th and 7th in his first appearance of the year to tie the game.  The game remained tied until the bottom of the 8th getting a runner to third with just one out when Jose Peraza tried to dart home on a fly ball out to centerfield only to be denied by the right arm of Starling getting his first pro assist.  In the 9th Burlington pushed around Chris Elder to third with a couple sac bunts setting up Diekroeger for a chance to give the Royals the lead and the 2012 pick came through with a single but Burlington wasn’t done there as Starling quickly put his team up by two connecting on his second triple of the season.  Those two runs were enough for the Royals to win and extend their lead in the division over Danville.

About The Author

I grew up on the mean gravel roads of Iowa where I started my love for baseball from the age of 2. George Brett and the voice of Denny Matthews deepened my love even more for the Royals as my father and I spent summers listening to the team on our deck or in the car on our way to or from my little league and high school games. Sports was always the common bond that my father and I enjoyed and the Royals were in the center of that.I currently live in La Vista with my wife, two sons, two dogs and a pair of gross cats where we are grinding through until we can move somewhere warm when we retire. I own Casino Cab Company and Bluffs Affordable Auto Repair in Council Bluffs trying to build my 1% empire. If you are in the area you can find me at Omaha Storm Chasers games on most nights or just follow me on twitter @ClintScoles.
