Starter Chris Dwyer couldn’t back up his complete game start last time out but was saved from a loss Thursday with a late game comeback.  The lefty lasted just four innings while allowing 11 hits and six runs (5 ER).  The Chasers would trail 6-2 into the 9th when they would rally to tie the game with a a walk and three hits to pull within a run, ultimately tying the game on an a two out error by third baseman Chris Woodward.  That error would send the game to extra innings where back to back doubles in the 11th from Adam Moore and Irving Falu would give the Chasers the lead and ultimately the win.

Midland Rockhounds 13 NW Arkansas Naturals 3

Ouch !  That is all I can really say about J.C. Sulbaran’s start as the newly acquired prospect from the Reds system gave up eleven runs on nine hits and five walks including two grand slams on the three home runs that he gave up.  The Naturals gave up four home runs with three of them coming off the bat of Conner Crumbliss who drove in seven runs with those three homers.  The Naturals couldn’t leave the yard with any of their five hits dropping a lopsided affair.

Wilmington Blue Rocks 2 Lynchburg Hillcats 1

Starter Andy Ferguson has been quite the revelation at High A Wilmington since arriving.  The 18th round pick out of Arkansas State upped his strikeout numbers to over a K per inning with his nine strikeouts Thursday while lowering his ERA to 3.22 with his four hit, one run, six inning start .  If the starter has had a fault in his seven starts it would be the long ball as the righty has given up five in that time but when you are attacking the zone the way he does (7 walks) that can happen.  Unfortunately for Ferguson his one run effort wasn’t good enough to earn a win on this night as the Rocks offense was struggling to put runs up on Hillcats pitching scoring just one run through the first nine innings.  The game would got to extras where a walk in front of a Cheslor Cuthbert single moved the winning run to 3rd base.  The Hilcats manager would decide to load the bases, a move that has backfired a couple times this year for Royals opponents in minor league action and did again on this night when the Lynchburg reliever walked in the winning run.  The win pushed the Rocks 1.5 games ahead of Lynchburg for the division title.

Kane County Cougars 5 Clinton Lumber Kings 3

First round pick Kyle Zimmer didn’t have his good swing and miss stuff Thursday but he had good enough stuff to get him through seven innings and earn his 2nd Midwest League win.  Both of Zimmer’s runs allowed were unearned allowing a run after the leadoff hitter reached on an error by the right fielder advancing to third and scoring a hitter later on a single.  The second run allowed by Kyle came in the third when a single was advanced to second on another error by Julio Aparicio in right and balked home by back to back miscues by Zimmer.  Down 2-0 after 3 the Cougars got some help to pull ahead in the 4th scoring three runs with the aid of a hit by pitch, a pair of walks, two wild pitches, a passed ball and just one hit to take that 3-2 lead.  More help would come in the 6th for Kane scoring a run without a hit this time after a walk to Michael Antonio was moved to second on another wild pitch and brought home by a fielding error from the Clinton third baseman.  Clinton would slice the lead to one in the 8th but the Cougars would answer with their first legit run in the bottom of the inning when a single by Antonio drove in Aparicio following his two out double to push the lead and eventual winning margin to two.

Idaho Falls Chukars 12 Missoula Osprey 5

The Chukars offense had struggled in Billings getting much done but that wasn’t the case in this one as they punched out 12 hits and 12 runs for a win in the series opener.  The 7th and 8th hitters did much of the damage with six hits from Nick DelGuidice and Jerico Blanco including three extra base hits, four runs scored and five driven in.  Starter Clayton Schulz used the run support to his advantage earning his third win with a six innings of one run ball including seven strikeouts.

Princeton Rays 5 Burlington Royals 4

The Royals bullpen let a winnable game get away Thursday shrinking their division lead to four games.  The Royals had built a 4-2 lead through 6 innings with a RBI single by Humberto Arteaga in the 3rd and a three run 6th that included a run scoring single by Bubba Starling and a two run home run from Patrick Leonard.  The home run for Leonard tied him with Adam Walker of Elizabethton at 13 for the league lead. With a 4-2 lead got cut to a run in the 8th with a pair of Rays singles sandwiched around a Freddy Rodriguez wild pitch.  The game would slip away from Burlington in the 9th when closer John Walter blew his second save of the season when he gave up a two run home run to Brandon Martin, his second dinger of the night.  The Royals would get the tying runner into scoring position but a double play off the bat of Mark Threlkeld would end the rally and the game.

About The Author

I grew up on the mean gravel roads of Iowa where I started my love for baseball from the age of 2. George Brett and the voice of Denny Matthews deepened my love even more for the Royals as my father and I spent summers listening to the team on our deck or in the car on our way to or from my little league and high school games. Sports was always the common bond that my father and I enjoyed and the Royals were in the center of that.I currently live in La Vista with my wife, two sons, two dogs and a pair of gross cats where we are grinding through until we can move somewhere warm when we retire. I own Casino Cab Company and Bluffs Affordable Auto Repair in Council Bluffs trying to build my 1% empire. If you are in the area you can find me at Omaha Storm Chasers games on most nights or just follow me on twitter @ClintScoles.
