Burlington Royals 3 Johnson City Cardinals 2

The Royals got good pitching and their usual #BTownBombSquad power Friday night to finish off the defending champs and advance to the Appy League Finals.  Burlington put together just five hits but as usual one of them left the yard this time off the bat of Mark Threlkeld in the 2nd inning to give the Royals a 2-0 lead.  A sac fly in the 5th would extend the lead to 3-0 which would be enough for starter Daniel Hernandez and recently called up right-hander Miguel Almonte.  Hernadez put down seven via strikeout in his six innings allowing just one run on six hits before turning things over to the recently called up Almonte.  The Dominican right-hander, Almonte allowed a run in the 9th on a two out double but extinguished the Cardinals rally with his fourth strikeout in three innings.  This is the first time as a Royals affiliate Burlington has advanced to the championship series.

Game 1

NW Arkansas Naturals 5 Arkansas Travelers 1

The Naturals offense came up big with thirteen hits in just seven innings to take a win in the first game of the doubleheader with rival Arkansas.  Outfielders Brian Fletcher and Yem Prades combined for five of the Naturals hits including three doubles and also scoring four of the teams five runs to pace the offense.  While they were doing the work on offense Yordano Ventura was doing enough to keep the Naturals ahead while on the hill.  Ventura allowed just one run in 5.2 innings while working around four hits and a couple of walks, striking out three in that time to secure his first AA win.

Quad Cities River Bandits 8 Kane County Cougars 2

The Cougar are a game away from playoff elimination with their loss Friday.  The Bandits scored four off starter Jason Mitchell before breaking the game wide open with four more off reliever Cole White.  The Cougars could get just two runs on six hits despite another mulit-hit game from Justin Trapp.  The second baseman has hit extremely well since July 1st putting up a .317/.380/.508 line in his 208 plate appearances in that time.

About The Author

I grew up on the mean gravel roads of Iowa where I started my love for baseball from the age of 2. George Brett and the voice of Denny Matthews deepened my love even more for the Royals as my father and I spent summers listening to the team on our deck or in the car on our way to or from my little league and high school games. Sports was always the common bond that my father and I enjoyed and the Royals were in the center of that.I currently live in La Vista with my wife, two sons, two dogs and a pair of gross cats where we are grinding through until we can move somewhere warm when we retire. I own Casino Cab Company and Bluffs Affordable Auto Repair in Council Bluffs trying to build my 1% empire. If you are in the area you can find me at Omaha Storm Chasers games on most nights or just follow me on twitter @ClintScoles.
