The Royals announced the trade today of Kila Ka’aihue for Oakland A’s righthander Ethan Hollingsworth.
The Royals become Ethan’s third different franchise after being drafted from Western Michigan University in the 4th round where he put together a 18-12 record and 3.23 ERA in three MAC seasons. Â Hollingsworth coming out of college had a 89-92 mph fastball and what was described as a nice slider but since being drafted and getting more looks by scouts has what has been described as fringy breaking stuff but a good changeup and good control on his 89-91 mph sinker/fastball. Â At 6’2 200 lbs Hollingsworth’s upside is at best a back of the rotation 5th starter with a more likelyceiling coming as a low leverage reliever type to add depth in AAA.
Ka’aihue became a darling of fans and statheads alike with his high walk rate and good power in 2008 and 2010 will now attempt to win a spot in a organization that has added Brandon Allen to go along with Daric Barton and Chris Carter. Â All four players appear to be fringe major league types with good on base skills.
