Minor League Profile Ethan Hollingsworth

The Royals announced the trade today of Kila Ka’aihue for Oakland A’s righthander Ethan Hollingsworth.

The Royals become Ethan’s third different franchise after being drafted from Western Michigan University in the 4th round where he put together a 18-12 record and 3.23 ERA in three MAC seasons.  Hollingsworth coming out of college had a 89-92 mph fastball and what was described as a nice slider but since being drafted and getting more looks by scouts has what has been described as fringy breaking stuff but a good changeup and good control on his 89-91 mph sinker/fastball.  At 6’2 200 lbs Hollingsworth’s upside is at best a back of the rotation 5th starter with a more likelyceiling coming as a low leverage reliever type to add depth in AAA.

Ka’aihue became a darling of fans and statheads alike with his high walk rate and good power in 2008 and 2010 will now attempt to win a spot in a organization that has added Brandon Allen to go along with Daric Barton and Chris Carter.  All four players appear to be fringe major league types with good on base skills.

About The Author

I grew up on the mean gravel roads of Iowa where I started my love for baseball from the age of 2. George Brett and the voice of Denny Matthews deepened my love even more for the Royals as my father and I spent summers listening to the team on our deck or in the car on our way to or from my little league and high school games. Sports was always the common bond that my father and I enjoyed and the Royals were in the center of that.I currently live in La Vista with my wife, two sons, two dogs and a pair of gross cats where we are grinding through until we can move somewhere warm when we retire. I own Casino Cab Company and Bluffs Affordable Auto Repair in Council Bluffs trying to build my 1% empire. If you are in the area you can find me at Omaha Storm Chasers games on most nights or just follow me on twitter @ClintScoles.

A little bit of “competition” and “depth” won’t hurt any organization.. Starting pitching is an obvious need and adding Hollingsworth might step up the game of some of these other guys like Sean, Vin, Luis, Everett, and even Mike Montgomery..

Really wished Kila would have gotten “the chance” in 09 or a “real chance” all together….probably never will

Moose & Kila through their 1st 82AB in the 2012 MLB season were very similar #s & both looked awful but the difference in getting an opportunity after that was a belief in 1 & not the other…..

Vin and Sean still have options remaining. if not moved to bullpen (doubful – but Vin did well in bullpen op the other day), then both will be in AAA next year.

could be part of a package deal for a #1-2 starter in offseason

Seems like Hollinsworth is a better version of Mazzaro and O’Sullivan… will this mean Vin and/or Sean will be out of the organization soon?
