It was announced today that the Royals claimed former Marlins and Cubs righthander Chris Volstad. I saw Volstad a couple times last season and if I can recall correctly he was looking rather poor at the time. His fastball was working in the high 80’s low 90’s that day and he was struggling in the early innings with control giving up six runs early before settling down and finishing off with five innings of work. It was a cold kind of rainy day but for a guy who was a former major league starter Volstad was quite unimpressive with a weak breaking ball.
If this move is made to save money and ship Luke out of town then I guess this move is okay but it doesn’t fulfill the need to improve the team on the mound now.
