Celebration (Minda Haas Photo)

Chasers fans had to wait to have their Monday night fireworks until the 12th inning but as usual they got to see them following a Chasers win. Starter Jake Odorizzi was decent but as he has most of the year had his pitch count get a little away from him as he threw 92 pitches in just 5 innings of work. The top pitching prospect in the org allowed a run in that time while striking out 6 and giving up 5 hits and a pair of walks getting a no decision. The bullpen was capable following Odorizzi giving up just 1 run and keeping the Chasers offense within striking distance down just 2-0 as the game went to the bottom of the ninth. In that ninth inning as they seemingly have all of this year the offense responded with two runs to tie the game and send it to extra innings. The bullpen would hold up for 3 innings until the bottom of the 12 when Max Ramirez walkoff 3 run home run ignited the fans fuse of fireworks.

San Antonio Missions 3 NW Arkansas Naturals 2

The Naturals lost a close one in extra innings when a new reliever lost control.  Starter Michael Mariot kept his team in the game limiting the Mission to just 4 hits and 2 runs over 7 innings while striking out 6 taking a no decision.  The former Cornhusker has been outstanding since joining the Naturals rotation going 2-0 with a 2.65 ERA in 6 starts showing solid control, walking just 1.59 per 9 in those six starts.  The Naturals manufactured a pair of runs on a couple sac flies to tie game, sending it to extra innings.  The Naturals who had just 2 hits in the first 9 innings never threatened in extras eventually dropping the game when new reliever Nick Rogers struggled with the zone walking three hitters around a single to give San Antonio a walk off win.

Wilmington Blue Rocks 12 Frederick Keys 6

The addition of Matt Fields to the Rocks lineup has been a been tremendous asset and the former indy leaguer helped power the Rocks team to a win.  Wilmington was down 3-0 heading to the 4th when Fields got the offense going with a two out solo home run that created a tad bit of momentum.  The 5-7 hitters Lane Adams, Brett Eibner and Jose Bonilla capitalized on that with three doubles in a row to even the game at 3.  The Rocks would put two on the board in the fifth with a Cheslor Cuthbert RBI single and another RBI by Fields this time with a double.  The Rocks would expand their lead to 6-3 with a Orlando Calixte RBI double in the 7th but the bullpen would give up that lead sending it to extras.  In extras Keys reliever Brandon Erbe would lose the zone, walking four to lead off the 12th, leading to six Rocks runs for a 12-6 win.  Wilmington goes for the sweep tomorrow with Jason Adam on the mound.

Kane County Cougars 6 Peoria Chiefs 0

As I discuss in this weeks podcast sometime the best international signees are the guys that don’t cost much money and tonight proved that with two Dominican signees who weren’t huge names at the time playing key roles in a Cougars win.  Starter Angel Baez was on his game dominating the Chiefs lineup for 6 innings while allowing just 2 hits and no runs.  The right-hander put 8 hitters away via strikeout working his fastball at 94-96 much of the night and topping off at 98 to give a bit more buzz for the 2008 signee who is quickly turning himself into a prospect to watch.  Baez wasn’t the only Dominican prospect with a solid game as fellow Dominican signee, Jorge Bonifacio continued his solid season going 2 for 4 with a double and a run scored as part of the Cougars 6 run offensive effort.

Burlington Royals 13 Danville Braves 5

A big offensive night for the Royals and 2011 1st round pick Bubba Starling.  The #5 overall pick from last year hit his first and second professional home runs as part of a 3 for 6 night driving in 6 in the process to pace the team to a 13-6 win.  Every member of the Royals lineup reached base at least once, knocking out 14 hits, walking 4 times and getting on a few more times thanks to 5 Braves errors.  Starter Daniel Hernandez was the beneficiary of the runs support earning his first win with a 5.1 inning 2 run performance striking out 8 along the way.  “When he’s patient at the plate and lets the ball travel (to him), he’s very dangerous,” Burlington manager Tommy Shields.- via the Burlington Times

Idaho Falls Chukars 5 Ogden Raptors 2

A three run 3rd inning helped the Chukars to consecutive wins over first place Ogden.  2nd round pick and starter Sam Selman missed out on a chanced to collect his first win as a starter when he ran into pitch count and minor problems in the 5th leaving with the bases loaded.  Reliever Joe Lopez would hit the first hitter he faced bringing in Selman’s lone run again but getting out of the name with a ground out to extinguish the Raptors rally.  The pen would take over from there shutting out Ogden the rest of the way to earn a Chukars win.  Solid night from DH Parker Morin going 2-3 with a home run and another run scored to pace the Chukars offense.

About The Author

I grew up on the mean gravel roads of Iowa where I started my love for baseball from the age of 2. George Brett and the voice of Denny Matthews deepened my love even more for the Royals as my father and I spent summers listening to the team on our deck or in the car on our way to or from my little league and high school games. Sports was always the common bond that my father and I enjoyed and the Royals were in the center of that.I currently live in La Vista with my wife, two sons, two dogs and a pair of gross cats where we are grinding through until we can move somewhere warm when we retire. I own Casino Cab Company and Bluffs Affordable Auto Repair in Council Bluffs trying to build my 1% empire. If you are in the area you can find me at Omaha Storm Chasers games on most nights or just follow me on twitter @ClintScoles.

This is the type of pitcher Jake is. He’s a strikeout pitcher without a true wipeout pitch which drives up his pitch count. His breaking stuff and change up need to take another tick up for him to be effective in the majors.

Bubba is going to have quite a few big K nights with his inexperience with quality offspeed offerings. The good part is he can deliver on the fastball.

Nice night for Bubba!! I don’t like the 3 strikeouts, but the power is definitely there. I think he will be a slow mover, but may be worth the wait. Are they planning on getting him to low A sometime this year?? He might be 24 by the time he gets a cup of coffee. I’ll say it again, Wil Myers NOW!! What’s the story with Odorizzi’s pitch count? Is this just a Royals pitching program philosophy?? 5 innings 100 pitches, is about what the guys in KC do.
