Rumors and Rumblings Day Two of the Winter Meetings
Tuesday was another quiet day with just the Giants and Red Sox making noise during the meetings.
Wil and Frenchy
The Royals have stood firm and announced that Myers will not be in any deal for RA Dickey.  This is a great discovery and clearly shows that the Jeff Franceour days are numbered in right-field at the K.  Sorry Frenchy Corner but  I’m sure you would prefer an All Star corner instead.
Mets, McCarthy and others
I like that the Royals are holding out on Myers as it doesn’t appear the Mets are really proving that they want Dickey around. Â If they did then a 2 year deal would be easy to get done and still easy to trade for the Mets as long as it didn’t contain a no trade clause. Â Almost any team that would give up a significant piece wants to have security that Dickey is going to be around for a couple more seasons, a team like the Royals likely needs that $5M first year and then tack on two more on top of that.
The Royals are said to be one of a number of teams interested in Brandon McCarthy. Â The right-hander would certainly be a fan favorite with his twitter ways giving the Royals the best Twitter rotation in the league with Danny Duffy, Jeremy Guthrie and McCarthy. Â Of course McCarthy was one of the few people involved in the game that enjoyed the booing of Robinson Cano, immediately endearing himself into Royals fans hearts. Â If the Royals get him inked look more to his road numbers than the total package that he has put up the last two seasons but even those road numbers are a major improvement over what the Royals have seen on the mound the last few years.
I would give the edge to the Angels in a deal for McCarthy unless the Royals are willing to add an option, Â second year or big increase in money which would be very risky with his injury history.
As I discussed yesterday the Royals best bet at this point could be trying to workout a deal for Bud Norris and hope he takes a Felipe Paulino type step up. Â The Stros are in pure rebuild mode trading on of their few major league pieces in Wilton Lopez to the Rockies for struggling Alex White and another A ball prospect.
I like what Jeff Luhnow is doing but I’ve said over and over I don’t know how he survives two years from now unless his owner is the nicest guy in the world. Â Ownership and Facebook fans want wins and this team looks light years away from winning. Â Its a tear down and rebuild but at this point it looks like the foundation needs to be built over again and rich guys aren’t the most patient people in the world.
The Royals don’t believe Tony Abreu or Irving Falu are good enough to fill the void if Alcides Escobar would go down with an injury that took significant time and are looking for a veteran utility infielder according to Bob Dutton.
This seems like a waste of money to me. Â A team like the Royals has to depend on their starters being healthy thats just the facts, they can’t afford to toss away money on the bench. Â Ride Abreu or Falu on the bench at league minimum and hope Esky can give you another 160 games. Â If the Royals are looking to add someone who gives them versatility MLBTR reported yesterday that Emilio Bonifacio could be available in Toronto. Â I could see the Royals interested in him if they were willing to platoon him around the field in CF, SS, 2b and in the corners on Gordon and Frenchy days off. Â He would add the sort of speed Yost likes at the top of a lineup.
